The Expressionist (Songs From The Side) – 2007

I have weird attraction to the lost, disenchanted, lonely and the morally corrupt – and it’s never worked in my favour.  But what it does do is allow me to grow my ever nagging thirst need for understanding those who have slipped through the cracks of society.

Needless to say, about 70% of my work are ballads.  But ballads are not what people come and see shows for.  They are not what people dance to or want to hear on records and radio, so they rarely appear on my albums.

I had amassed a lot of darker tracks that were unreleased and in the mid 2000’s I fell in with the artsy-fartsy crowd in Melbourne.  Bohemian minstrels and majestic wannabes were taking advantage of the city’s new love for street artists in the wake of the criminal element clean-up clean-up.  It was nutter heaven and I was there to soak in the vibe.

Melbourne Street Art

There was more of a focus on deeper/folksier music from broken hearted battlers who were crying over their guitars in front of brick walls with their $200 shoes and up-market shirts.  And I had the dark Ballads to match.

Film and TV were also turning out gut-retching shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Lost and The Note Book, all looking for songs to hang yourself by.  What a great opportunity to show my deeper side and release a pure LP based solely on making people sick.

Of course the Chardonnay sippers pretended to love it, and only the true Memphis Nights listener will even know it exists.  But it does, for my entertainment more than yours.

Here’s a sample of this 14 track sleeper released in 2007 – “The Expressionist (Songs From The Side)”
